The West Coast Had The Soundtrack Game On Lock...
Has anyone ever noticed that?
One of the first actual CDs I ever bought was the Above The Rim Soundtrack. I felt cheated because I heard the tape version had like three or four extra songs on it that couldn't fit on a 72 minute CD. We need to get some uploads on this one guys.
The Friday Soundtrack is one of my favorites. I loved "Super Hoes," that ill song by Threat, Mack 10's joint, fuck it... all of it was dope from front to end.
Can't forget the Murder Was the Case SDTK. One of the best if you subtract the wack R&B shit on it.
I had the Juice SDTK too. It had some East Coast heat on it, but it was more of a West Coast album in terms of feel, esp with Too Short and Pooh and Cypress Hill. Great soundtrack, I have the Rakim and BDK joints memorized by heart. WHAT COULD BE BETTER, BITCH?!?!?!?!?!
Menace II Society had BDP and Pete Rock and CL Smooth on it but I bought it because I wanted to hear more shit by MC Eiht, Ant Banks, Spice One, and of course Too Short.
Am I missing anything of note?

I'm going to have to completely disagree with you on this oneMGP wrote:I had the Juice SDTK too. Besides being a primarily east coast style album, this had more of a new jack swing vibe to it than a west coast one i'd say. The Cypress Hill joint doesn't really sound like a typical west coast joint in the vein the MC Pooh and Too $hort ones do, leaving only those 2 joints to really represent the left.
I still maintain that the 1,2 punch of Uptown Anthem and Know the Ledge is the best 2 song combo to be found on any rap album ever (actually, it's probably tied with the Memory Lane/One Love combo).

I own Tales from the Hood sdtk - haven't listened to it since I got it. I remember it being pretty bad, and wondering who the fuck havok and prodege were (most blatant name biting ever?)Cleanhobo wrote:Boyz N The Hood has some good tracks, and so does Tales From The Hood, Colors, South Central, Don't Be A Menace, High School High, The Show, Rhyme & Reason... wait, we were supposed to be talking about strictly West Coast soundtracks, huh?

Haha, nah. Havok & Prodege have been puttin' it down for the West Coast since the very early 90's with the group South Central Cartel. I'm sure you've heard of them. Honestly, it's just a crazy fuckin' coincidence that they have the same names (spelled differently, obviously).admiral wrote:I own Tales from the Hood sdtk - haven't listened to it since I got it. Tracklisting for Tales From the Hood:
1. Let Me At Them - Wu-Tang Clan
2. Face Mob - Face Mob Featuring Scarface
3. Tales from The Hood - Domino And Chill
4. Born II Die - Spice 1
5. Ol' Dirty's Back - Ol' Dirty Bastard
6. I'm Talkin' To Myself - NME And Grench The Mean 1
7. The Hood Got Me Feelin' The Pain - Havoc And Prodeje Featuring Dawn Green
8. One Less Nigga - MC Eiht
9. From The Dark Side - Gravediggaz
10. Death Represents My Hood - Bokie Loc
11. Hot Ones Echo Thru The Ghetto - The Click
12. The Grave - N.G.N. Featuring Killa
I haven't listened to it in a while, but I remember liking the Click Song, the MC Eiht song, the Spice 1 song, the Face Mob song, and I think the Wu Tang and Gravediggaz songs were good too.

Nah, I don't think it is either. In fact, hardly any soundtracks are. But there are some good tracks on it that are worth owning, that's all I'm really saying. I mean, if 'Know The Ledge' was the only good song off of the Juice soundtrack, wouldn't you still say owning the soundtrack is very much worth it? Granted, there obviously isn't anything as good as 'Know the Ledge' on the High School High soundtrack, but you get what I'm saying.DirtyNeedles wrote:im sorry but high school high was NOT a dope soundtrack.

Wrong on most counts.DredScott wrote:the east coast had just as many dope soundtracks if not more and the best ever imo (soul in the hole).
new jersey drive vol. 1 & 2
soul in the hole
high school high
rhyme & reason
belly
the show
don't be a menace...
NJ Drive was average due to the filler that made it 2 volumes. Condense it and we'll talk.
You're right about Soul in the Hole. May be the best ever in many ways but I put Murder Was the Case ahead of it.
High School High wasn't dope.
Rhyme and Reason was dope.
Belly? Nope.
The Show was 70% West Coast. Revisit it. That's not an East Coast album or even a 50-50 split. Even an artist from NJ made a track about the West on that joint (Treach).
Don't be a Menace was underwhelming.
As stated earlier, the West Coast had the soundtrack game on lock.

"High School High" had "Get Down For Mine" by Real Live (my favorite Larry O. & K. Def song), "The Rap World" by Large Professor & Pete Rock and "Next Spot" by Datty X & Grand Pu on it therefore it is dope.
Agreed on "Murder Was The Case". "What Would U Do?", the remix of the title track, "U Betta Recognize", "Dollars And Sense" and "Natural Born Killaz" are all classic but i've always been particularly fond of the Snoop/Dogg Pound "Who Got Some Gangsta Shit?" joint.
Highlight of "Menace 2 Society" is "Pocket Full Of Stones" remix.
