Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (no Necro)

Post by admiral »

Let's talk about Harlem World Crew/Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Image

Dr Jekyll's real name is Andre Harrell, someone you might be familiar with. He started Uptown Records which was home to Heavy D, Guy, Father MC, Jodeci, and a bunch of other New Jack Swing artists. Ended up turning into Puffy's right hand man. Not sure who the third person in Harlem World Crew is. They released a few singles:

Rapper's Convention:

"I've got money in the bank, a four room crib
Believe in equal rights and women's lib"

Love Rap

Mr Hyde went by the name Lonnie Love when he signed to Profile and put out the single Young Ladies in 1980/1981

Dr Jekyll joined up with Hyde over at Profile and they put out a few hit singles, including the fantastic Genius Rap (with the Genius of Love break) and AmPm

Genius Rap

AmPm

Fast Life

The Challenge and Getting Money are both dope as well, but I don't have mp3's of those joints.

They released an LP in 1985 called Champagne of Rap which had Yellow Panties and Tranformation.

I think I Drive a Lexus mentioned somewhere he had a best of cd he made, which could perhaps fill in the gaps of missing songs...

Have a few tracks from old Street Sounds Electro albums.

'Genius Rap' is a stone classic track.

the real issue this thread brings up:

Genius of Rap, It's Nasty, or Mariah Carey's Fantasy?

honestly, Fantasy. Although thats a bit like voting for Tarantino in those Curb threads. That break kinda hurts my head after a while.

I've thought about making a mix of all the songs that sampled "Genius of Love," let's see how many can be listed:

Jeckyll & Hyde "Genius Rap"
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five "It's Nasty"
Redhead Kingpin "A Shade of Red"
Funkdoobiest "Natural Fun"
Redman "Brick City Mashin'"
X Clan "In the Ways of the Scales"
Above the Law "Dose of the Mega Flex"
Boogiemonsters "Bronx Bombas"
Fresh Kid Ice "Roll Call"
Mellow Man Ace "Linda"

Isn't there an MC Lyte song with this sample?

I've got that somewhere if anyone wants it uploading. From what I remember, the quality wasn't brilliant though.

LOLz @ "(No Necro)". Great title, even better thread.

They started this flossed out buppie Ted Dibia$e/Gordon Gecko shit
and being a mere footnote in Andre's pre-Uptown career is the motherfuckin' thanx they get?

For my money, "Gettin' Money" is their best track.

Dr Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde - Gettin' Money
Such an ill bassline. In fact there's ill basslines on my 3 favorite tracks by them (this, "Fast Life" and "A.M P.M") provided by Kurtis Blow, who produced all 3.

I remember reading an interview with Russell (posiibly in the 50th edition of The Source?) where he was laughing that Andre used to book a lot of shows uptown and would often book them above Run Dmc and LL on the bill. See, he ain't just talk that arrogant shit - he practiced and lived it too.

Their numerous 12"s are up there with the best 12"s by Spoonie Gee plus Furious Five, the Wild Style soundtrack and Run Dmc's first album as far as pre-'85 rap goes.

Probably "It's Nasty". That was the first song i heard which used "Genius Of Love". You can't front on "Fantasy", though. Top 3 Mariah song.

There was an exceptional Biz remake of "Genius Of Love" on the 2nd X-Ecutioners album.
