Bobby Byrd, arranger and collaborator with funk legend James Brown for 50 years, off and on, died Wednesday of cancer in his Loganville home. He was 73.
Byrd met Brown in Toccoa, where Brown was serving time in a juvenile facility for burglary. Brown pitched for the prison baseball team, and his team played against Byrd's team.
James Brown and Bobby Byrd's gospel group eventually morphed into the Flames, which became James Brown and the Famous Flames.
The two talked about music; both were fans of gospel. Byrd and his family helped arrange for Brown's early release in 1952 by guaranteeing they would provide him a job and a place to stay.
Brown and Byrd's gospel group eventually morphed into the Flames, which became James Brown and the Famous Flames.
Byrd contributed vocals, keyboard work and guidance to many of Brown's hits, and the two worked together for decades ג a relationship that was productive, if also stormy and marked by lawsuits.
It is Byrd's voice that can be heard, along with Brown's, on the hit "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine," and on "Licking Stick."
Byrd sang at Brown's 2006 funeral along with his wife, Vicki Anderson, who was also a member of Brown's touring band for many years.
The couple were married in 1970, and James Brown's father was a witness at the wedding, Anderson said Wednesday in an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
She said that of the songs written by her husband, "Baby, I Love You" was her favorite.
"That was the first song that he wrote for me," said Anderson, 67.
Byrd sued Brown a few years ago to get royalties for songs he said he wrote but for which he was never paid. The lawsuit was thrown out for a lack of timeliness, Byrd said in an interview with the AJC earlier this year.
Anderson said she and several family members were home with Byrd when he died, around 1:30 p.m. Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are to be announced.
RIP BOBBY BYRD :(
