Nine Inch Nails' 'Year Zero' plot hits the web

Trent Reznor has rolled out the tracklisting for Nine Inch Nails (music)' forthcoming concept album, "Year Zero," and is setting up the album's premise via a series of strange websites, audio files and album leaks.

"This record began as an experiment with noise on a laptop in a bus on tour somewhere," Reznor said in a prepared statement issued last week. "That sound led to a daydream about the end of the world. That daydream stuck with me and over time revealed itself to be much more. I believe sometimes you have a choice in what inspiration you choose to follow and other times you really don't. This record is the latter. Once I tuned into it, everything fell into place ... as if it were meant to be. ... The record turned out to be more than a just a record in scale, as you will see over time.

"Part one is Year Zero. Concept record. Sixteen tracks. What's it about? Well, it takes place about 15 years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you'll have an idea of the backdrop," he continued. "The world has reached the breaking point--politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, Year Zero examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth.

"This record is much more of a 'sound collage' than recent efforts from me," Reznor continued. "A lot of it was improvised. It is very tedious describing your own music. It's not just music. It's probably too long, but it felt like the right thing to do to paint the complete picture. It will sound different after a few listens. You can think about it and it will reveal more than you were expecting. You can dance to a lot of it. You can f--- to a lot of it (maybe all of it depending on what you're into)."

A dedicated group of NIN fans has been pulling together the numerous pieces of Reznor's pre-release plot at the fan website EchoingTheSound.org, and has uncovered a group of websites--IAmTryingToBelieve.com, AnotherVersionOfTheTruth.com (which features a secret image revealed by clicking and dragging the mouse cursor over the main-page photo), ChurchOfPlano.com, ConsolidatedMailSystems.com, 105thAirborneCrusaders.com, USWiretap.com and BeTheHammer.org--that intertwine to paint a grim picture of the United States circa 2022 as a country where church and state have been fused together, the government is secretly drugging the population, and the civil liberties of US citizens are being trampled in the wake of US-waged wars in a series of Middle Eastern countries.

Information posted at many of these sites includes "eyewitness" accounts and photos of a mysterious apparition dubbed "The Presence," which looks like a giant hand extending from the sky to the ground.

Also posted at EchoingTheSound.org are links to mock phone messages that are related to the plot, as well as high-quality MP3 versions of the "Year Zero" tracks "My Violent Heart" and "Me, I'm Not," each of which, the site contends, was discovered on a USB flash-memory drive placed on the floor in a restroom at recent NIN tour stops in Europe.

Meanwhile, the album's official leadoff single, "Survivalism," recently hit radio stations. A complete tracklisting for the album is included below.

Though "Year Zero" won't hit stores until April 17, fans can look forward to next Tuesday's (2/27) release of "Nine Inch Nails Live: Beside You in Time," a concert DVD filmed during the group's late-2006 North American tour. Clips from the disc, as well as other extras, are posted at the forthcoming set's website.
