Favorite Funk Albums?

Post by vermillion »

What are some of your favorite Funk Records? The weather is real nice and I like to dust off my funk albums after a long winter and give them some play. Help me refresh my memory, but here's a rough top 10..

1) Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
2) Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On
3) Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
4) Ohio Players - Honey
5) Parliament - Mothership Connection
6) The Meters - Look-Ka Py Py
7) Rick James - Street Songs
8) Zapp - Zapp II
9) Bootsy Collins - Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby!
10) Sly and the Family Stone - Stand!

Stone cold classics :

Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul
The Bar-Kays - Soul Finger
The JBs - Food For Thought
James Brown - Sex Machine - Live
Marva Whitney - It's My Thing
The Meters - The Meters
Funkadelic - Funkadelic
Parliament - Mothership Connection
Lightnin' Rod - Hustler's Convention
Ohio Players - Pleasure
Curtis Mayfield - Curtis Mayfield
Baby Huey & The Babysitters - The Baby Huey Story
Zapp - Zapp

Speaking of Funk Inc, Superfunk is my fav' LP by them due to Goodbye, So Long being on it.

Those horns used on All On My Nut Sac by Da Lench Mob and Smoke 'Em And Choke 'Em by Big Mike are just too good.

such a damn good album, i'm really surprised this never caught on as a cult item. considering the subject matter/proto rap status/kool&gang involvement this really should've had a trendy revivalist moment that hopefully would've prompted similar things coming to light

I guess it sorta has what with all the people who've been put onto it via Sport being on an Ultimate Breaks & Beats LP back in the 80s and all the subsequent sampling by Dismasters Jungle Brothers, Beasties, Black Moon, Wu etc, but, yeah, the LP definately deserves more praise/a bigger following and it's suprising the album hasn't been raped by rap producers as there are so many truly sick horns on there ripe for sampling.

i'm having trouble with this cause every single one i think of is immediately ammended by 'but that's kind of a soul (or rock or jazz) album as well'. my top 3 might actually be identical to vermillions, except maybe S/T for the funkadelic one, but i wouldn't consider any of them purely funk albums. I always think of maggot brain as a rock album anyways.

i might be over thinking things here

Yeah most Funk albums bleed into a few different genre's. Some people I know claim Purple Rain is a funk album. Anyways, thanks for all these mentions. I'm going out of town soon and all these albums are going to come in handy for the long trip..

^^ judging by how many of the ones you listed lean into a somewhat rockish direction, i would recommend looking into Fugi and Black Merda if you haven't already

had that problem too until i loosened my definition of what a funk album is...

i figured prince's self titled and/or shuggie otis' inspiration information were a bridge too far though...
