the five albums are all unique and all great. can't really go wrong. the main thing that sets them apart for me is their accessibility. slanted & enchanted grabbed me immediately, for example, while wowee zowee took a number of spins to really "get." another thing that differentiates their work is the degree of tightness or cleanliness of the songs. generally the earlier stuff is looser and more spastic and endearingly imperfect, whereas on terror twilight (the last album) the songs are laid-back and a lot more polished (but still spectacular).

i'm not even sure i could rank them, but your list would probably be different from mine anyway, just depends on what style you prefer.

I don't see any reason to not listen to their albums in order. As stated above, all are excellent and wildly different from one another. I come back to Crooked Rain and Wowee Zowee moreso than the others, though. No real low points, maybe some spiral stairs songs, but nothing worthy of pinpointing. Malkmus's solos are worthy of checking too, 'face the truth' being his high point post-pavement.
'Slow Century', their DVD, is a great watch.
Definitley hitting up atleast one of the reunion shows.

A couple faves just for shits:
Frontwards
In the Mouth of a desert - S&E
Harness Your Hopes
Filmore Jive - CRCR
Painted Soldiers

The Silver Jews are another Pavement associated band highly worthy of checking. Malkmus played all over 'American Water'

"Frontwards" is probably my favorite Pavement song.

hmm as far as albums...

"Slanted & Enchanted" leads off the best... Summer Babe is my shit.
I definitely prefer the more imperfect records like S&E and Crooked Rain... Crooked Rain.

but Wowee Zowee gets really incredible in the latter half of the record.
Grave Architecture
AT&T

Brighten The Corners has their biggest pop song (i think) with "Stereo" leading off.

range life is a beautiful song.
i always thought he said "stone temple pilots .. they're arrogant bastards". when i finally found out it's really "elegant bachelors" i liked it a lot less.

Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is Pavements best album and one of the best records in the universe.

definitely start with Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain if you're looking to get into them and then go from there. Then I'd checkout Brighten the Corners, Wowee Zowee, and Terror Twilight if you're feelin Crooked rain.

very true.
honestly, I didn't discover pavement until college, so like 2004. So, I'm not fully aware of their pop impact with singles... I've just always felt that Stereo was written with radio in mind. Where "Cut Your Hair" still has that nonsensical weirdness I associate with Pavement the most.

if your dad listens to Malkmus and the jicks then he is fucking awesome. While not up to Pavement standards the solo stuff is still pretty great.

I'm putting put together a mix of Pavement's B-Sides and I'll post it soon. Pavement has a penchant for putting great songs, which are more accessible than most of their material, out as B-Sides ("Greenland," "Frontwards," "Lions (Linden)," "Harness Your Hopes," "Box Elder," "Hands Off the Bayou," etc.). If you're judging Pavement based off of their albums you're missing out on a lot of their best stuff.

Stereo was their biggest charting "hit"

Ackbar, as much as it's "cool" to like Pavement, I can't see you getting into them.

But if you're really interested, I'd say get the starter pack that just came out called Quarantine the Past

Once you know you like them, I'd say start with Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. It's a little easier and less raw to get into than Slanted & Enchanted. I'd say then move on to Wowee Zowee which is my favorite record of theirs.

Grounded is one of their finest moments (they have a lot though)

went to this past Wednesdays central park gig (saw them at Pitchfork in July as well) and shit was a ball. shorter set that night due to the pissing rain and lightning, but that was all for the better. glad to catch pavement twice before they never ever play together again though it kills me to not hear at&t/carrotrope/harnessyourhopes live
