The Heads are an English stoner rock band formed in Bristol, England in 1990. They have released seven albums, numerous EPs and singles.
Too weird to be truly embraced by the stoner rock crowd, but too heavy to appeal to seemingly anyone else, The Heads themselves pre-empted such suggestions with previous long-player title ג€˜Everyone Knows We Got Nowhereג€™.

However, the Bristol-via-major-acid-trip quartetג€™s third album sees them operating in an expansive mushroom-filled field of their very own.

Musical trends are casually regarded before being viciously slung through a window from the moment ג€˜Dissonautג€™ breaks from a weirdly intoned intro ג€“ referencing, amongst others, the occult and rock festivals ג€“ into an ever-building riff of house-leveling intensity. A couple of minutes later the urge to shout ג€œFuck yeah!ג€ is almost irresistible.

Everything is done either at opium den pace or with underlying punk spirit, but such attitude is exactly what makes The Heads so mind-expanding.

ג€˜Bedminster #1ג€™ teeters on the edge of a supersonic chemical-induced breakdown, gripping attention right to its caterwauling false conclusion. Another minute and a half of calm after the storm follows, but your brain is already past repair. Put simply, this is what it must feel like to lose your mind after doing LSD since the ג€™60s.

ג€˜Under Sidedג€™ is a headache of an album; approximating ...Trail of Dead drumming along to Monster Magnet minus their most recent cock rock tendencies, completed by Simon Priceג€™s almost monotone vocals, epitomizing their stoner-slacker cool.

Need any more proof? Try all 18 minutes of closing hell-storm ג€˜Heavy Seaג€™. After a cacophonous ascent and destructive return to earth, it dies disconcertingly into reverberations of swashing seashore breakers, intertwined with disorientating echoes of still wailing guitars.

The Heads emerge from their blazing psychedelic bunker clutching their sanity, but the real question is, will you?
Discovered this a few weeks ago. UK Stoner/Psyche Rock band. Some might find the lead singer's nearly monotone delivery offputting, but I've grown to like it alot after a handful of listens. Can't wait to hear more form these guys, this is my first exposure to them.

Panthers - Let's Get Serious

, a moment should be taken to applaud the Panthers for some of the best song titles in recent memory: "Thank Me With Your Hands," "It's Not the Heat It's the Humility," "Don't Be a Dick." That's some pretty funny stuff. The music isn't quite as witty and fully realized as the titles, but it is still quite good. The Panthers' five-track EP is dramatic, supercharged post-punk, very angular and muscular and drawing from influences like the Stooges, Fugazi, and At the Drive-In. All five of the tracks are drawn from the same loud and supercharged cloth, Jayson Green's tunefully yowling vocals soaring over the twin-guitar maelstrom and stuttering drums. The most successful song is "Sexist Not Sexy"; it slows down from time to time and gets a little dubby, giving the listener a chance to breathe. The catchiest song is no doubt the climactic number "Don't Be a Dick," with its near boogie rock riffing. The Panthers are definitely one of the more promising bands around, and this disc is an exciting sample of their powerful sound.
Another band on tour with High on Fire. They are pretty good also. Not really metal though, not sure how I'd describe it. They kinda go all over the place.

No Salvation, the first release on Relapse Records by hardcore group Coliseum, finds this Louisville trio pushing the limits of their inner speedometers and combining the thunder of Motorhead with the passion of a young Ian MacKaye.

With No Salvation, the band has conjured up a head-banging, fist-raising, sing-a-long rock record that will undoubtedly introduce heavy music to many a young punk fan while retaining the admiration from a more seasoned crowd. Guitarist and vocalist Ryan Patterson, who has played with Kentucky hardcore acts such as The National Acrobat and Black Cross, fronts Coliseumג€™s deliberate attack.

They may be loud, but underneath lies a stealthy, savvy ability to write songs. Coliseum has developed a knack for peppering several songs like ג€œThe Fate of Menג€ with numerous pop hooks, making them quite possibly the hard-rock equivalent of a Cadbury Easter egg laced with arsenic.

Pattersonג€™s lyrics are as aggressive and defiant as the music to which theyג€™re sung, but show an introspective side that runs an emotional gauntlet of anger, despair, hope, and triumph. When he throatily sings lines such as ג€œIג€™ve got a rage inside of me / It never dies / Keeps me aliveג€ on ג€œBeliever,ג€ youג€™re sure he means it. There are no gimmicks here.
New full-length. I really like it from the times I've listened to it so far. They don't really stand out in any particular aspect, but I love their energy and nonstop assault.

Savannah, Georgia's Baroness blow the lid off their cauldron of hall of fame riffs on their first record for Relapse and debut full-length titled Red Album. With a sound built upon a resolute sense of purpose and shaped by hundreds of explosive live shows, Baroness position themselves at the forefront of heavy music with an epic album that is at once powerful, expressive, confident, and commanding. Red Album sees the band expand its sonic vision; colossal riffs and haunting vocals roll like thunder across epic songs spanning both the intense and the sublime. As the Red Album proves, Baroness' formidable reputation proceeds them for a reason.
One of the better albums I've heard this year

Megadeth - Rust In Peace (10/10) - USA - 1990

Behold the thrashterpiece that is "R.I.P.", MEGADETH's greatest achievement to date.

Who would have thought it possible for an album of this calibre to see it's release dated post 1988-89 during Metal's depression, and when Thrash alone was said to have met it's demise.

I remember watching the video for "Hangar 18" (the first version). Forget about the song for a second (I know it's hard!), nothing is more Metal than MEGADETH playing inside a fenced cage while minions of ruthless fans thrash forward from the outskirts of Area 51! If that doesn't set the stage for a great album, you're better off sticking to Gn'R.

Upon its release, two occasions were marked. First, hails to Dave and Co. for sobering up. Honestly, it shows in the music guys. Just compare R.I.P. to any of their less concentrated (for lack of the term "sloppy") albums prior to this. Do you really think that something like "Holy Warsג€¦", "Take No Prisoners", or "Rust In Peace" could have been conceived and performed the way it was with a belly full of booze, and a set of lungs full of pot?

Second - Deth had finally overthrown those who many consider to be their counterparts (think hard). Perhaps not so much in terms of sales, but as for musical quality, and listener/fan-satisfaction, this year it would be Vic Rattlehead waving the Blackened flag.

And how could anyone deny the victory? "Rust In Peace" shreds throughout the entire score! Cutting leads and chopping rhythm offered up from the new team of Friedman and Mustaine offered heads to the mercy of a tornado, (*raises eyebrow* of souls, shall we say? Hehehג€¦) and new member no.2, Nick Menza had arrived, and it was clear that he was out to take no prisoners, or even any shit for that matter!

Need I really say more? Legend of this albums speaks volumes for itself, and some jack-ass writer from "The Metal Observer" can't possibly cover anything that hasn't already been said!
1. Holy Warsג€¦ The Punishment Due
2. Hangar 18
3. Take No Prisoners
4. Five Magics
5. Poison Was The Cure
6. Lucretia
7. Tornado Of Souls
8. Dawn Patrol
9. Rust In Peaceג€¦ Polaris
