Rediscovering the Red Hot Chili Peppers

after seeing them live and reading the keidis book i have a whole new appreciation for these guys.

before it was just like a rap rock funk band that had a lot of big songs but were too pop for me to get into. also the prevalance of under the bridge all over the place since i was 11 was irritating.

keidis is a not so great singer but an awesome songwriter. his book is not well written or structured but its imperfections kind of let you into who the guy is. its very candid. and after reading it, the chili peppers lyrics spring to a life they didnt have standing alone.

so i watched all their music videos they ever did and its like damn, they did some artistic, fun shit. and this background puts stadium arcadium in a different place then when i just listened to the leak and was half disappointed.

my favorite rock band.

Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo Party Plan are the only Chili Peppers albums I can listen to anymore. Mother's Milk is as "mature" as I care to get. BSSM has its moments too, but I dont need to hear it ever again. After that, it seems like they play one single song, at a whole bunch of different speeds.

honorable mention: Out in L.A., which is an important album of b-sides, live tracks, remixes, and demos (which essentially have Slovak playing guitar on the seminal tracks that got them the initial WB deal but a different guitar player on the debut).

my wife has the book. she's a big fan and loved the book. i think you'd rele enjoy it. i'm not a big reader, but i even thumbed through a couple chapters and found it interesting.

there's a picture of a 13 year old anthony smoking his very first joint.. his dad rolled it for him.. and his dad also took the pic.. coolest family evar!..

there's a story he tells.. about breaking out of rehab.. walking to a truck dealership.. and buying a brand new truck just to drive down to the ghetto and score some more smack.. the man is dedicated..

They lost my interest with the string of ballads starting with "Under the Bridge."

I bought Californication, and the album is good, but the production makes it unlistenable. So loud the vocals are fucking clipped. Apparently Rubin has fought the Loudness War on every RHCP record since.

The By The Way album was half ass but the singles were fire. The shit they doing nowadays is HA I just don't get it. Both singles I've heard were garbage. So I'll see when I hear the CD.
