THE WHO - TOMMY

The full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy that launched the band to international superstardom, written almost entirely by Pete Townshend. Hailed as a breakthrough upon its release, its critical standing has diminished somewhat in the ensuing decades because of the occasional pretensions of the concept and because of the insubstantial nature of some of the songs that functioned as little more than devices to advance the rather sketchy plot. Nonetheless, the double album has many excellent songs, including "I'm Free," "Pinball Wizard," "Sensation," "Christmas," "We're Not Gonna Take It," and the dramatic ten-minute instrumental "Underture." Though the album was slightly flawed, Townshend's ability to construct a lengthy conceptual narrative brought new possibilities to rock music. Despite the complexity of the project, he and the Who never lost sight of solid pop melodies, harmonies, and forceful instrumentation, imbuing the material with a suitably powerful grace.

the who sell out

Pete Townshend originally planned The Who Sell Out as a concept album of sorts that would simultaneously mock and pay tribute to pirate radio stations, complete with fake jingles and commercials linking the tracks. For reasons that remain somewhat ill defined, the concept wasn't quite driven to completion, breaking down around the middle of side two (on the original vinyl configuration). Nonetheless, on strictly musical merits, it's a terrific set of songs that ultimately stands as one of the group's greatest achievements. "I Can See for Miles" (a Top Ten hit) is the Who at their most thunderous; tinges of psychedelia add a rush to "Armenia City in the Sky" and "Relax"; "I Can't Reach You" finds Townshend beginning to stretch himself into quasi-spiritual territory; and "Tattoo" and the acoustic "Sunrise" show introspective, vulnerable sides to the singer/songwriter that had previously been hidden. "Rael" was another mini-opera, with musical motifs that reappeared in Tommy. The album is as perfect a balance between melodic mod pop and powerful instrumentation as the Who (or any other group) would achieve; psychedelic pop was never as jubilant, not to say funny (the fake commercials and jingles interspersed between the songs are a hoot). The 1995 CD reissue has over half a dozen interesting outtakes from the time of the sessions, as well as unused commercials, the B-side "Someone's Coming," and an alternate version of "Mary Anne With the Shaky Hand."

I've always considered The Who the epitome of Dad Rock.

Whenever they tour, I picture Dad's all over the country breaking out their crispy leather jackets and freshly pressed jeans and making plans to wax the Corvette the day their American Express advance tickets arrive via FedEx.

That said, this forum could use more classic rock, so let's keep this thread moving.

Isn't Dad Rock just another way of saying Classic Rock though?

good point.
I mean whether it was once protest music or hippie love shit... they go on tour now and its going to be that crowd.
case in point: I went to a CSN show with my parents. They play OHIO and the shit had nothing to do with Kent State anymore... everyone was just stoked that they played ohio at a show in ohio.
and that is what is wrong with that generation... fucking sell outs.

Which band, in 1976, set the record for the strongest PA system in a concert in Charlton, London, England?

The Who. They put 76,000 watts of power at 120 decibels... The Guinness Book of World Records dubbed it "the loudest concert ever". Nobody in the crowd of 60,000 came home without a ringing in their ears
The Who will always be respected for the loudest convert EVAR.

A good friend of mine thinks The Who are the greatest rock band of all time. I don't agree with him, but I don't think less of him for thinking that.

I love The Who. Odds and Sods, Quadrophenia, Who's Next, The Who Sell Out, etc. So many good to fucking great albums.

Definitely appreciated.

I love the Who even if Keith Richards called Hendrix a savage :naswtf:

Still a great group. Mike Myers plays Keith Richards in a Biopic due this year or next. That should be good if he brings some drama chops.

Agreed. Dunno about America, but here I'd say they possibly have more under-40 fans (proportionate to their fanbase) than the others mentioned. It probably has a lot to do with Quadrophenia and numerous Mod revivals. They're all dad rock though.

What makes you doubt his story? He made a very dumb mistake, but I don't think he's a kiddie fiddler.
In 2003 Townshend received a police caution after acknowledging a solitary paid access in 1999 to what he admitted was a child pornography website. He claimed in the press and on his website to have been engaged in research for "A Different Bomb" (a now-abandoned book based on an anti-child pornography essay published on his website) and his autobiography. He also stated that his research was part of his longstanding campaign against child pornography. He stated that he had formally reported the website he discovered during his research to The Internet Watch Foundation [2] and the organization corroborated his claims in a statement on January 30th 2003. [3] Townshend was also adamant that he had not downloaded any images during his research. The police searched his house and confiscated 14 of his computers. After an intensive forensic investigation of his 14 computers over a four-month period, the police confirmed that they had not found child pornography on any of his computers. Following this, the police decided to offer him a caution rather than charge him with an offence. By accepting the caution, Townshend became subject to the registration requirements of the Sex Offenders Act 1997 for the five-years determined by statute. Townshend has stated in interviews that his autobiography will include his own recollections of being sexually abused as a child, a theme that cropped up in his rock opera Tommy and that has motivated his campaigning on the topic and his 30-year history of support for childrens charities.
