you'd think after seeing replays FIFA might actually do something about it.

I actually thought the best refereeing performance in the tournament was in the Netherlands-Portugal game, the players started acting like cunts diving and slapping each other and the ref booked and sent them off. What happened the next day? Blatter (head of FIFA) condemned the refs performance in the papers.

If you want to cut this cancer of diving out of the sport, DO IT FUCKING PROPERLY. Have a video comitee sit down after each match and assess suspension for cunts like C.Ronaldo They wont be so quick to do it the next time.

Fuck Blatter and fuck FIFA

most "entertaining" team indeed...
funny shit. the refs do need to start dishing out more cards for that bullshit, and the managers need to take responsibility too (but they wont). but the one where miguel falls down he clips his knee with the other player and that shit hurts, noone seemed to realize it. the coaches totally overreacted tho.

Zinedine Zidane's agent says the France captain headbutted Marco Materazzi in Sunday's World Cup final because the Italian made a "very serious" comment.

Zidane appeared to react to something that was said and was dismissed for his violent charge into his opponent.

"He told me Materazzi said something very serious to him but he wouldn't tell me what," agent Alain Migliaccio told BBC Five Live Sport.

Sources in France say it is believed Materazzi insulted Zidane's family.

Highlights: Italy 1-1 France (Italy win 5-3 on penalties)

Materazzi himself has not spoken publicly about the incident except to deny a claim by Paris-based anti-racism group SOS Racism, made on Monday, that he had called Zidane "a dirty terrorist".

"It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist. I'm ignorant. I don't even know what the word means," the Italian news agency Ansa quoted Materazzi as saying after the Italian team returned to Rome.

"The whole world saw what happened on live TV," he added.

Migliaccio, who spoke to Zidane early on Monday morning, added that Zidane did not elaborate on what Materazzi said.

"I don't know. Zinedine didn't want to talk about it but it will all come out in the next week," he said.

"He is a man who normally lets things wash over him but on Sunday night something exploded inside him.

"He was very disappointed and sad. He didn't want it to end this way."

The France squad arrived back on Monday and went straight to a lunch reception hosted by President Jacques Chirac.

Zidane was also in attendance and was cheered by fans who gathered to welcome the team home.

Offering his support, Chirac said: "Dear Zinedine, in such a hard and intense moment for you, I would like to express the whole nation's affection and admiration for you.

"You are a virtuoso, a genius of football and an exceptional human being. That is why France admires you."

Meanwhile, France defender William Gallas was adamant Zidane was provoked into the headbutt.

"I didn't see it but sometimes football is not only with the ball," the Chelsea star told BBC Sport.

"Sometimes when you have a player who is very clever and says something to you then maybe you are angry and want to 'kill' that player.

"Maybe, and I say maybe, he has made a mistake."

Materazzi refused to answer questions afterwards, though Materazzi's agent Claudio Vigorelli said: "I've known Marco for a long time and I don't think he is capable of provoking a player. He is a good boy."

But Gallas interpreted Materazzi's silence on the matter as an admission of guilt by the Italian.

"I don't know what he said. You'll have to ask him but he's gone. I know why he's gone because maybe he's done something wrong."

On his way back to the dressing room after his 110th-minute dismissal, Zidane passed the World Cup trophy.

It brought a sad end to his glittering career and his misery was compounded when France went on to lose 5-3 on penalties.

"Zidane didn't say anything," said Gallas. "He was very disappointed for everybody - for the team and himself.

"I'm very sad for him. It was his last World Cup and everybody wanted to win for him.

"We deserved to win but that is life. I think we played very well and better than Italy but sometimes football is very strange.

"Everybody is disappointed. I hope we will maybe win next time."
Materazzi's father believed his son was the real victim in the incident.

"I spoke to my son briefly after the game," said Giuseppe Materazzi.

"Marco had told me he had been provoked. It's as though they have something against him each time.

"In the past two years, Marco has only been on the receiving end and the injuries he has sustained are proof of this.

"I don't want to be controversial, but there are things that have to be said instead of just pointing the finger and putting a black mark against someone."
sig-worthy material right there...

Italy had the most complete team in the tourney, and deserved to win. Their defense shut everyone down, and they pass the ball just as good as anyone. Their reputation as divers is really dubious after watching the final as well. France dove like crazy the entire game, and Italy hardly at all.

Also, I think Buffon should have won the MVP award. He has been incredible almost every game, and saved Italy's ass twice in the final.

I agree that it was just an absolutely shitty, horrific, inexplicable way to end an amazing career and that that'll go down in infamy like Eric Cantona jump-kicking a fan in the stands. I genuinely feel bad for the dude because as great as he was, he will never ever live that down.

That being said, it's so easy for us to sit back and say "he shouldn't have done it." Of course he shouldn't have, even he knows it. But going through a game like that with so much on the line for a guy trying to go out on top coming out of retirement who missed a header who's been getting pulled and grabbed all day, to hear someone insult your culture as a "dirty terrorist," it's hard to say how any of us would have reacted. And I have absolutely no doubt that's exactly what he was called because that's the type of thing that would set someone off in that manner.

Italy played like shit the entire game outside of like a 5 minute span in the first half. They were begging for PKs because they did absolutely nothing from the second half on. It's a shame the better team didn't win because France had several chances to score and just couldn't get it done.

Nonetheless, a great cup. It just really sucks to wait 4 more years but that's what makes it great. And Argentina looked like the best team.

PKs...bollocks!

It's all speculation right now, but right now Materazzi is looking like a real bitch, a real real bitch. Everyone on the field in all of France's games has been treating Zidane with great respect, dude is like the Jordan of soccer, the best player of our generation. For him to be disrespected in a serious manner in his last game ever in a world cup final, smh. I love this sport but the racial shit and the flopping is just not a good look.

I do not blame him. Like said before...looking back now we can all say with all things riding it was not a wise decision...but I understand it. I am amazed at the lack of outrage I saw on TV today about this...I know its not official but you know something was said...you can just watch the clip and see it. Also fuck that ridiculous "I'm ignorant" response...

I also would say that the headbutt itself was one of the more gully things I have seen in years...and the fact that the Italian flopped like a fish in pain makes it even more impressive. Quite a way to go out really.

So, i'm reading in the press that a Lip Reader has analysed footage and said that Matterazzi called Zidane, "The son of a terrorist whore"

Just reports at the moment, but, to be honest, if thats the case then i do have a little sympathy for Z (his ma was taken to hospital seriously ill just hours before the game apparantly) Obviously can't condone what he did, but can understand it.... If it turns out to be true, then Materazzi is gonna have a serious, serious problem playing international football any time soon.

If that's the case, then I condone it. Whoop that trick, it's your last game and the game is basically over anyways, don't stand for that shit. If someone acts like a kid, treat him as one, smackem.

I disagree. There was still a significant amount of time on the clock and France had been dominating the play up to that point. Remember the header chance that Zidane had?

Its tough to mount any kind of attack with 1 player down, especially against a defensive-first team like Italy. Whether Zidane was justified in headbutting Matterazzi or not, Zidane still cost his country a chance to win the game.

BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.
The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:

Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".

He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".

Zidane's agent, Alain Migliaccio, has hinted that Zidane will soon reveal exactly what was said by Materazzi.
Really fucked up if it's true and I agree with binary that you just don't disrespect Zidane like that, especially in his last game and no matter what is on the line. period.

He still chose the worst moment possible to smack Materazzi though...

Man, fuck that motherfucking motherfucker. Now my only regret is that Zidane didn't drop a forearm shiver on Materazzi's greasy face so that would have to wear dentures for the rest of his life.
