If you take the MVP off the team they would struggle to win a game. A real MVP is the most valuable guy to any team....not just a playoff team.

the player who means the most to his team given their situation and this person usually does things like take over a game or raise the level of play around him (inspirational or by playing so fluidly everyone else's skill set is better/more naturally utilized) etc etc.

a comparison between other similar players on other teams must be made and then a final comparison between position finalists must be made. as far as the unifying criteria goes I am passionate about the idea that wins is not the most important part of determining mvpism

well that's always true in basketball, the team might not try hard in the regular season but will clearly be a top team.

mostly true in football, where you are never the MVP if your team only won 9 games, since the best QB will win more than that. it is a little more interesting when you look at non-QB MVP where you see dominant players on bad teams like JJ Watt.

baseball you could be the MVP on a sub-500 team, most recently Mike Trout 2013, he was like 3WAR ahead of everyone and team won 78 games, also 2012 where he was also God and they missed the playoffs(though scumbag team left him in minors to start the year). Granted he was robbed of the MVP both years, that kind of thing just doesn't happen with best NBA player or Best QB

Not best player, but best season.

Curry and Harden are having better seasons then AD and Lebron, but neither are better players. AD and Lebron will both miss around 15 games why the Curry and Harden will miss a couple.

So I don't feel you can go with who is the best player, but rather who is having the best season.

I don't think there is one set definition. Depends on the year and specific players.Sometimes best players. Other times, a team makes it but only because of a great player (tho not best).

I think we can all agree season mvp need not be on a winning team like for a jj Watt type case. there's a place for that. but what about series or game mvp?
