Re: Ask Me About A Rapper w/Alaska
before this even starts im gonna look at this two ways, from the point of view of an artist and as a fan for each name mentioned. please try to keep it at one name per post. i know a lot of you guys like to use every name in one post, like a bunch of over eager assholesPhilaflava wrote:Aesop Rock

so for aes:
as an artist - I remember the first time i heard aes back in like 96 or 97, i thought he sounded like a combination of rock and el-p which at the time was mind blowing. As he started dropping more material i he was kinda stuck in that box, i always liked the stuff he put out but it wasnt until labor day that he really started standing out and in my opinion having his very own thing. The thing i really like about aes is that you see he is on a creative journey. with each album he impliments something new. whether its song structures, changing his sound a bit, loosening up with his flow, etc. My favorite aesop releases daylight ep, fast cars, and none shall pass. aes played none shall pass for me a year before the record dropped and i was blown away by it. It has a distinctly west coast feel to it and not in the way that he just tried to sound west coasty but that living on the west coast has had an effect on his which really shows that he is an artist taking from his environment and growing beyond trends and sounds. I love that dude.
as a fan: I feel like i have had the opposite curve that a lot of aes fans have had. I like his sound more and more with each new release. i was never a huge fan of darker music. that being said if the darker music is good i can check it, but with aes his music has gotten away from the earlier darkness and moved to a more fun sound. his rhymes and beats have a lot more movement now. its hard for me to go back to a lot of the early work, because the direction of the newer work makes the old stuff sound dated.
as an artist: He is one of the most dynamic natural mc's ever. While not necessarily technically adept he more than makes up for that with mayham that works perfectly on track. personality by the assload. as a more technical mc i would kill to have a 1/4 of what he has.....minus being a 1/4 dead.Rabbi Jihadovich wrote:O.D.B.
as a fan: Brooklyn Zoo is arguably the best wu song and top 5 rap song ever. many great moments on the first wu album. after that he kinda left me bored, booze and drugs fucked him up

as an artist: I see mindbender as a person that has the heart, drive, mind, and flashes of talent to be a good mc. however, he often casts his net too wide and ideas and flows get muddled because of it. i think he needs to really focus his ideas and flows to a more concentrated version of what he is trying to do. i understand how it feels to come up with a line that might make sense to you, or that you think is amazing and you want to get it out there but sometimes you have to let that go if its a detriment to the track. I think mindbender needs to do the following to really move his sound forward -Martin wrote:gotta do mindbender. itll be like a kid finding out theres no santa claus.
1. stop fucking around on heere and worrying about what people here think, it will only cause confusion and in some cases hurt you as an artist because you are worried about bullshit.
2. focus his ideas and sacrifice the great idea that doesnt work on the track or flow and find a new idea or flow, i know thats a hard thing to do but it will make the track infinitely better
3. really focus on your voice when deliviering rhymes, i feel you sound much better on track when you are more at a talking level than a louder level. you have a deep enough voice that just talking the rhyme can be powerful.
4. stop trying to force so much into bars.
5. focus on making the mixes and songs sound cleaner, you dont need to sound like kanye it can be dirty in a wu way but if you are presenting it as the new, especially to a mass audience of any sort it has to sound professional. even if its a leak.
as a fan - honestly i dont really listen to that many mindbender tracks for the above mentioned reasons but i do think he has a lot of potential. he seems to be caught up a bit in proving he is dope and has his own thing as opposed to mastering his own thing. i dont think mindbender will ever be huge but i think he has the love and heart to be a good artist if he can focus.
as an artist - i think lo is one of the best writers in rap music, i think his albums are all solid. i would like to see more of his live show personality come across on his records. i love his stage presence. he is one of the few that can get on stage without another soul and put on a killer show. great sense of humor and great live mc.jake b wrote:One Be Lo

Nobs
Internet Rapper - http://ipullrank.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
as an artist - i feel el was the star of that record. his production on that album was just amazing. it provided the perfect soundtrack for what vast and vordul were trying to do. i think vast and vordul had a great thing going with that album. i was actually in a group with vordul before he started working on that record. i always thought they had the potential to make a great record if they worked together with the right guidance. vast at that time had a lot of good metaphors and out of all the people i know sounded the most comfortable on track. i still think vordul was the best rapper to come out of atoms family and his verses on that album gave me the same feelings i used to feel when i listened to supreme clientele. i loved his style wordplay and ideas.Mindbender Futurama wrote:Cannibal Ox![]()
as a fan/friend - I will never listen to this album again. it makes me sad. i see it as the embodiement of wasted potential. between mismanagement of their careers, egos, personal tragedy, etc i just hate it. I think they could have been great and had a great moment but vast and vordul let it get away from them. they had a great ally/mentor in el and they could have gone on to make some really interesting music but now we will never know. still pisses me off to this day.
as an artist - ghost is probably in my top three alltime. what can you say about the guy. he has personality, style, flow, story telling, slang, skill i mean he has it all. i think there are 3 complete mcs in history 1. slick rick, 2. ghost, 3. andre. there are others that might be greater in areas but for my money no other artists are as complete as these guys. i think ghost has been uninspired as of late. i havent like a record since pretty toney, although there are still flashes of his brilliance. The ILLatino wrote:

Nobs
as for nobs
as an artist - im not that familiar with his mcing. what i remember was him sort of being lumped into the guys that kinda sound like slug. i think nobs talents are in his production. i didnt realize he even did beats and then i heard the dez and nobs behemoth album and i was super impressed with his work on there. gave me a lot of respect for him, i have even asked him to do beats for me, that was about a year and a half ago...so far he has gotten me one...lets say he doesnt have the best work ethic
as a fan - nobs is a bitch. hahaha

Mac Lethal
as an artist - cryptic has an insane rhyme scheme and ability with word play. he writes some of the deepest conceptual rhymes i have ever heard and really knows how to explore a topic. his delivery can come off monotone at times, which might be because he is too much of a perfectionist. a lot of times i like crypts takes when he is just running with it as opposed to trying to master it and land it perfectly. i learned a lot from working with cryptic.
as a fan - i am really disappointed that nobody got to hear the last album he record called Truth. it was by far his best work, went back to a sort of boom bap/killing verses approach. it was suck a good record. hopefully one day someone will put it out.
mac
as an artist - mac has the most insane sense of humor on track and does a great job getting that across. i havent heard his most recent album but his previous work i liked a lot. my favorite mac song is the one he did with murs called girls of scribble jam. it really showcased his ability to put together funny story telling rhymes and he matched well with murs, which says a lot because i think murs is one of the all time great funny story tellers.
as a fan - my favorite mac lethal is watching him murder cats in battles. i never want to battle him, he would kill me.
