humbly suggest this is worth a separate discussion and being brought to general attention.

Don't hear nothing wrong with the beat, simple boom bap drum break, little loop, all gravy. I was a huge fan of this guy in the 90's, saw him at Nuyorican's Poet's Cafe in like 96, he tore shit down with the og Secret Wars, Animalistics, and Black Magic. Really thought he would blow up back then.
His album in I think 2003, was highly disappointing to me at the time, but I like it better now.
Hopefully this album will be tight.
Thanks for the heads up.

people used to compare me to Last Emperor and Digable Planets in the late 90's.

when I don't get over excited and shit, I often sound kinda similar. He structures his ideas differently than I do though.

still... duly noted. I wouldn't mind being slightly influenced by this guy. big up Keenonetwothree, my crew is called BD :phila:

This is awesome. I'm glad to see Emp remains at the top of his game and look forward to copping his next album when it drops. Hopefully it'll catch more attention than Music, Magic, Myth did.

Not too big on this track. It's pretty decent, but nothing to get excited for. Probably won't ever play it again unless it drops on an album, and I'm a pretty big fan of Last Emperor..

and you're going to sit there like some smug prognosticator and "predict the future of the forum" now? what a fucking waste of potential braincells you are.

dude, I came and gave the people a Last Emperor song. What posts have you recently started in this forum? None. What have you offered the people besides bitter childishness and petty judgement? Nothing. I'm not even mad at you, Roger. I'm just pointing out the facts.

now please, everyone: unlike this moderator here who is starting to derail the thread and expose his weak character, DO NOT SPEAK ABOUT ANYTHING BUT LAST EMPEROR AND ALL MUSICAL THINGS RELATED FROM NOW ON DOWNWARDS IN THIS POST, AND WE'RE ALL GOOD. I just had to show Roger the error of his ways. We can all see who's part of the problem and who's part of the solution.

Emp still got the dope writing skills, but his energy is a little reserved and the beat is cool for heads like us, but I guess he's not trying to get any new fans...

peace to Last Emperor still! he's a very gifted song writer.

I disagree with the latter part of this assessment. First of all, he's used a laid back style for years. Second, this track is called "Fine Art." His whole delivery is indicative of an intricately detailed approach to rhyming.

As far as him not trying to get any new fans, I don't know what's going on in his mind, but in my opinion this dude could be way more popular with the right promotion. It's not a matter of beats. Look at the success Cuban Linx 2 had last year. If Pitchfork or someone similar were to give Emp the hype he rightfully deserves then mad heads will hop on board. Not counting on this, but hey, you never know.

If I remember correctly, Mos Def called Emp his favorite rapper back when they were both with Rawkus. That said, a Mos Def guest spot couldn't hurt.

word.

the question is: what do some of these people WANT out of hip hop anymore?

the Jean Graes, the Last Emps, the Cormegas... we think/know they could be bigger stars than they are, but do they want to be bigger? Are they happy with their current lives? We have seen success ruin some good people in this shit, and some have even died. If Biggie never met Puffy, he'd probably still be a star anyways... but one that lived longer.

I haven't even heard of Last Emperor doing ANYTHING in like 8 years, I think. It's been a LONG time. This song makes it sound like he didn't stop making music. It's kinda cool how he just picked right back up where he left off though. But last I knew, he left rap BEFORE Rawkus was even dead... which was a fucking century ago, LOL

he needs a hype banger, still.

last emp is too wierd to ever blow up imo

judging from his webpage he hasn't been up to much. he drops a mixtape and has half older tracks on it from like 10 years ago?

whats up with that shit

*edit*

for philly heads, is he active in the local scene? does he hit up stages every now and then?

I think one of the biggest problems is that everyone still thinks Secret Wars when they think of Last Emp. That song's an underground classic, but he's made way better.

One Life is one of the greatest examples I can think of as far as what a hip-hop song can be. There is no reason that a masterpiece of that caliber should ever be overlooked.

Last Emp is a true talent. Don't sleep, check that TROY thread. All that "he's too weird too blow up" shit, nah, he had a chance back in the mid 90s but I don't know what exactly happened.
Can he blow up now? No. Not many can and I don't really care. As long as he still puts out dope, then I'll support.

This shit right here gets put on repeat every time I hear it:

Word is bond. I was just listening to this yesterday.

And what happened, the reason he didn't blow up in the 90s was because Dre put his project on the back burner.

Word. Okay, I can feel that. Yeah, it might have blown him up. The collective joints that would make up his 1996 "Legend Of Bigffot" LP are mostly all great, too.
"Animalistics" was next level when it was first out.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5fWBxg5xDDA&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5fWBxg5xDDA&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

...can see the comparisons with MB... Last EMp's flow also always kinda reminded me of a mellow Redman.

Before that Music Magic Myth LP dropped, I saw Emp at an instore in NYC and he straight tore shit up. He did the equivelant of that "Animalistics" track except about insects and such. Was truly great. I wish that was a demo that would surface.
