Shad - TSOL (new album)

Post by vermillion »

Anyone hear this? I won't be able to check it for a week or so, because my computer is getting fixed with all of my music. I got a link if anyone needs it.

I downloaded it because it pains me to send money over to Canada. Not until we get our health care shit in check, I refuse to fund that America Part Deux.

it's ill. hard to say it's better than the old prince cause that album has a gang of replay value for me but shad's wit and lyrics are on a whole different level than the old prince. i think the beats on the old prince are better but it ain't like he didn't get blessed with heat on this too, there are some raw joints on here.

Really dope album. Not sure if I'm feelin' it more than the "Old Prince" yet after just one listen ("Old Prince" production seems better), but it's definitely one of the better albums I've heard so far this year.

I just got this and haven't listened yet.
Canadian MC Shad (Shad, Shad K., or Shadrach Kabango) is, quite honestly, one of hip-hop's few reigning rappers left in 2010. He's simply unwilling to compromise, and quite honestly, he's one of the few artists who's actually increased albums that become better and better as he matures - not the other way around, where an MC creates a stunning debut album and falls into a sophomore slump and doesn't recover. I think part of this is due to Shad's everyman appearance, he doesn't try to come off as anyone he isn't. He's just another one of us, trying to find himself, trying to make sense of this world in whatever capacity he can. Like the rest of us, he has his mistakes, he has his revelations, he has everything we had, have, and will have. It just makes him almost instantly likable. His first two albums, When This Is Over ('05) and The Old Prince ('07), were great, but I felt their production held them back a little bit. Not enough to bring them down a few rungs in most people's eyes - it was just that the albums' lyricism held the album up a bit more than the production did. On TSOL, I feel that's corrected - you've still got a mix of introspective and high-energy tracks, but now you finally have the proper production to go along with it. It feels both 2010 and 1994 - it mixes two separate eras successfully. And for 2010, I think that's one of the highest compliments an album can receive.

Agreed with all of this.

It took a couple listens, but TSOL has really grown on me.

Been listening to this all week. Awesome album, and every bit as good as The Old Prince.

Did anyone hear his debut?... and does he have anything other than the three official albums he put out?

Yeah, it't not bad. Very rough, but not bad. Nowhere near The Old Prince, IMO.

there are a variety of meanings for TSOL

True Sounds of Liberty
The Sound of London
The Struggle of Love
"TSOL doesn't stand for any one thing," Shad says. "I just liked the sound of it. It represents the insufficiency of language to express feeling and ideas, which is why we have art. It can stand for a number of things: the struggle of love, truth shall overcome lies, 'lost' backward. It's representative of the ambiguity of life in a way."
Shad's sister told me "he wants people to make up their own meaning"

Resolved Question
Does Biggie Smalls hate HipHop???

"Shoulda been a cop, Fukc Hiphop"

I've been wondering what he meant by this.

Rap sucks, HipHop is better

Naw, he likes hip hop and rap. He was just referring to if he hadn't started rapping he would've been a cop.
So he's cursing it, not that he doesn't like it, just for the sake of it.

still can't believe he beat Drake for the Juno even though he sold a mill and hosted the event!

got to hang with him for a couple hours a few weeks back and success hasn't changed him for the worse, which means his next album will be even better.
