Rappers that dropped the ball.
Each had tremendous fan support, a proven track record, a hit single out. They were poised to take over this rap shit. Placing them in your Top 3 Dead or Alive between Marley Marl and Zach was perfectly tenable.
Then bam, the inconceivable occurs. Album drops and shit is a straight dud. A seriously steaming pile and a mile. The combined shittiness of Cam's last three LP's wouldn't even come close. You are genuinely befuddled. How the fuck did this happen?
Think Can-I-Bus (although I kinda liked that shit).

Canibus was tragic especially after his DJ Clue freestyles and blazing guest spots (e.g. beasts from the east, desperado, 4,3,2,1) BUT he should have had better production and not recorded so much on the road. Still he's had a pretty good career selling over a million copies and dropping heat with Rip the Jacker, mic club, and 2000 B.C.
There's alot of rappers who dropped the ball but i'd say Ras kass like philaflava said because he got locked up and missed so many opportunities. Which is sad because he's such a talented lyricist. Techneic coulda been bigger too but it just never came to fruition. Papoose dropped too many mixtapes and missed his window of opportunity too.

Moneywise, Chamillionaire is one of the most successful rappers in the world. Cham has a huge cult following and is, technically, a beast.Gyangsta 4 Life wrote:The gay major-label a&r consortium definitely got to this nigga. Should have stayed on slip-n-slide, or whatever.
Cham has prolly made more money in the last 5 years than Ras Kass, Canibus, Pharaohe Monch, and ahh, lets say Krooked I combined made in their whole careers.
As far as dropping the ball I'd go with Mos Def. Honorable mention to Ray Cash.

Yeh, but Cham was the next big thing for a second. Then he put out that terrible album, its follow-up and stopped saying nigga. Somewhere along the line I lost interest. He's unnecessarily corny now.Smitty wrote: Moneywise, Chamillionaire is one of the most successful rappers in the world. Cham has a huge cult following and is, technically, a beast.

"Bird Call" and its video were magic, though. JR had potential to blow.Haitian Jack wrote:jr writer? for realz? that mofo wuz just a straight-up cam biter wit no mic presence and punches almost as desparate as papoose. he pretti much maxed out.Magneto wrote:Bathgate

Like dude said, when he first came out, he had potential to be pretty big. Atleast were Juelz is. His buzz was rather big for a mixtape artist.Haitian Jack wrote:jr writer? for realz? that mofo wuz just a straight-up cam biter wit no mic presence and punches almost as desparate as papoose. he pretti much maxed out.Magneto wrote:Bathgate

very true. Although when his album dropped, every song was about how the industry fucked him . Ra has one of the illest voices in rap ever though.Renessis wrote:hmm....RA the Rugged Man?
His album was ILL but..
It took 8 years to get out. He got fucked by the industry, so maybe it's more like they dropped the ball...

I wouldn't say R.A. at all, namely because he's risen to prominence and hit both ends of the spectrum several times over. Major label in '93, then dropped to obscurity, then the Rawkus singles, then EC, then laying low, then rebuilt everything just off of guest verses on "Give it Up," "Uncommon Valor" etc.CasOne wrote:very true. He's, right now, at as good of a position as he's ever been, and after this next album we can really evaluate.
This topic's more appropriate for the likes of Mos Def, Saigon, wtc. , whose ENTIRE careers have been disappointments.

Mos Def is balling hard.
Hes in major motion pictures, sells out venues, does whatever he wants as an artist.
I know you guys had different plans for him, but his bank account is thick and he wakes up every day making his own creative decisions. Im pretty sure Mos Def is very happy with his career.
Some of the people you guys are naming didnt necessarily drop the ball. They just got fucked over. Saigon never wanted shit to unfold like it did. But it did and he has to live with it.
Ras Kass has never had an ounce of potential outside making battle rap verses and long ass history book raps that 15,000 people listen to. He dropped what ball exactly? T.I. and Ras Kass are in no way comparable other than they rap.
Ras Kass has no idea how to be musical and make songs and entertain average people. He raps his ass off. Cool. That shit is dead anymore.

WTF dude? We judge a rapper by how well he entertains average people? No one is close to early Ras Kass as far as lyrics and rhythm. From that same era I can only think of Nas who showed similar potential on his debut. Something tells me you haven't heard much of Ras. Marinate, Miami Life and On Earth is as "musically musical" as they come...Seduce wrote:

Whether to Jason of Philaflava or John Podesta, I will speak my fucking perspective openly

This. He is regarded as one of the best in the late '90s by many many people so what you're saying makes absolutely no sense.Comedy Quaddafi wrote:WTF dude? Maaaaan everyone hates on that album.battlecatmeowstab212 wrote: He squandered so much potential. Don't tell me "The New Danger" and "Tru3 Magic" aren't ball-droppers.
I really dug it.
The new one is bananas too.
Mos never dropped any kinda ball. Even True Magic was aight.
Agreed on Dice Raw, Ras Kass and Budden, even tho I still like him...he definitely fell off.
How bout Mystikal? LOL.
Not to mention he has the ability to make some of the best club/commercial songs I've heard, that never got released as a single. Ahha is was dying to be a stripper anthem, and The Whoop with Busta Rhymes would've made a pretty big single if he released.Yohan wrote:This. Ras Kass is nothing like the Canibus of the world. He makes great songs, and songs that could be accessible if released properly.
Jay-Z, Outkast, Nas are all big fans of dude, but it's over for him, but in his prime, he was as good as anyone at making rap music.
