this isn't a "who is overrated" post...you really thing all these guys are wack?
big l was dope.
jay has slipped but he was one of the best for a while.
xzibit's first album is highly slept on
fellowship was dppe when they dropped.
master ace is possibly the most consistent rapper still doing it. IMO, his first three albums are all great.
GK is a little overrated but they're not bad.
souls and pharcyde just haven't aged well. but their initial releases were ill.

i agree with mos def (talented but i pretty much can't listen to any of his albums) and kweli (he's just not good.

and aesop is 100% a better rapper then cl smooth. but pete rock is 100% a better producer then me, so cl wins.

TO GET THE THREAD BACK ON SUBJECT. Honestly I remember hearing Anticon for the first time and thinking I was hearing some crazy dope futuristic shit. I honestly remember thinking it was some next level shit that from beats to rhymes were completely dope. Now listening to the advancement blah blah blah I really wonder what in teh fuck I even heard in the first place. Dose One sounds like a walrus in Dante's 6th level of hell being slowly cheese grated to death.

very high, hovering around top 5/10-ish. probably Kool G rap, Rakim, BDK in that order. - unless that was a rhetorical question meant to indicate I have wack taste in emcees...all I can say is shame you don't like CL considering he's all over some of the greatest beats created, which must suck, but fair enough if it's your opinion...
nah, i didn't mean it in a dickish way. i was just trying to see some sort of gauge of how good you really think cl smooth is.
obviously, i agree, he was given amazing beats. but i'd still rather listen to group home's debut album over any pete rock and cl smooth album cause at least grouphome's rhmes are so bad they're funny. where as cl is so mediocre it's boring.

CL wasn't bad on American Me; he's a fluid as far as flow. Lyrics weren't always mind-blowing everytime but he did write a classic verse or two (T.R.O.Y.) and fits well with his voice. If anything, you did feel something was missing from the absence of working with Pete Rock. Not just the production but its a certain feel that CL had when you hear him working with Pete Rock. Its the same thing with GURU from Gang Starr. I remember hearing Street Scriptures and just feeling duped off the break; kind of reminded me of when I listened to Baldhead Slick album. I was hoping for one of the incarnations of Jazzmatazz and didn't get it.

Just wanted to say:

Guru > C.L. Smooth, and it's not even close. Guru is a top 25/30 MC to me.

 Word. You killed that beat off of Petestramentals. "Ready For War" ? I'm gonna dig that up today.

This is true for me and probably a lot more people on this site than are willing to admit it.

Other than that I never listen to wack shit.

When I heard The Manifesto by Kweli, I thought he was dope as hell.... but then I realized, along with the rest of the world, that he isn't.

CL Smooth is dope to me... even some of the American Me album was good, and yeah, I bought it.

Still, I actually like most of the stuff that's been listed... Del, De La, Beasties, Dilated (yeah, even Evidence), Masta Ace, FUCKING Gangstarr?! Jeeez.
