before you lose you shit, obviously, pete rock is one of the best producers ever. his beats with cl smooth are some of the most consistent and all around tight joints of all time BUT cl smooth was wack. sorry. he was. take away" T.R.O.Y." and his track record for dope verses is VERY weak. his voice and flow were cool but his lyrics fucking sucked. at times, he was on some nursery rhyme/ tv quoting shit like das efx but with out the iggity and it was just embarrassing. i remember about 6 or 7 years ago i decided to listen to "the main ingredient" in my walkman (yes, i rocked the cassette) and i was baffled by how wack he was. even on "mecca and the soul brother". it' a bad sign when your dj kills the whole album with one verse (for pete's sake) that he didn't even write.
so, yeah, cl smooth is garbage...or at least EXTREMELY overrated.
c/s to the fullest.

they made a big issue of getting off bad boy and puff. that it was the bad boy sound that was holding them back.

since getting off bad boy their promise of being a great group has gone unrealized. they have pretty much continued to drop uneven efforts both as a group and solo.

jada has great potential but never seems to come through
styles is like masta killah with a better voice.....by the way i think masta killah is awful. him and ugod have destroyed so many potentially good wu songs.
sheek, well i actually enjoy a lot of sheeks solo work.

I think they are more of a potential never realized type meets hype machine kinda deal.
Get ready to be crucified.
I thought "We are The Streets" had some joints on it. Besides the off brand typical Ruff Ryder tracks.

thats the problem. they are good for a few tracks at the most and the rest is filler. but i guess thats more of a problem with rap music in general.

not to sound like a dick about it, but a question to all the heads who say cl smooth is dope. if he's dope, then what is someone like master ace? an rap alien sent from heaven? (not a diss, i love master ace but i'm speaking comparitively)
i understand liking pete rock and cl smooth joints. the beats are insane and the songs are well made. but cl is just not very good. it's kinda like when you're fucking a girl for the way she looks and she starts to get annoying but you still put up with it cause she's fly. deep down you know if she was not fly to begin with you woulda never started messing with her annoying ass in the first place. cl smooth is that girls personality. pete rock is her looks.

this isnt hip hop but Kiss REALLY fucked me up. I loved Kiss for years, saw them live when i was 10. Then about a year or two ago i listened to some of their music and i feltr disgusted that i was repping Kiss. Theyre inuendos and lyrics are terrifying.

Freestyle Fellowship
Aceyalone.
Rasco.

Really most 90's west coast soft underground besides Pharcyde(they were genuine and funny as hell), Dilated being the pinnacle of fooling everyone. Some of those groups beats still hit, but listening to the raps now is :naswtf:

The raps are extra bad. Rasco sounds str8 homo now.

2nd CL smooth. Faggot@ss R&B brother thru and thru.

@Blockhead, not arguing man. but can you post up an example of a 'wack' CL Smooth lyric? Im just interested to see where you're coming from on this...I wouldn't really be too bothered if I just thought CL Smooth was decent or even above average but I actually think he is probably the best and most gifted rap lyricist ever! for example I can't think of a more lyrically profound anti-racism track than 'Anger In The Nation', and then on the other hand take a track like 'Act Like You Know' where he's just rapping some funky rhymes, but shit's incredible. talking about vocabulary/wordplay/imagery/story-telling... T.R.O.Y. doesn't stand out lyrically form any other track on Mecca. I would put CL way above Masta Ace

I liked CL's flow, voice, and cadence. His rhymes range from servicable to damn good. No one has ever sounded better on a PR beat.

This thread has Freestyle Fellowship written all over it.

Although, I didn't think they were good then.

honestly, picking out one verse of cl's to show my point is pointless. to me, he's one of those "rhyming for the sake of riddling" mc's who rarely says shit but finds away to be long winded regardless. he's high school poetry. the verse gloss posted above is as good an enough example an any. he's just corny to me. not to mention, it's a personal peeve of mine when corny mc's do that thing where they put emphasis on bad lines. cl smooth is the king of that. like akinyele without punchlines.
i give "troy" props cause it's a coherent song about loss, which is something very few rappers have pulled off.
that's very ill that he's your favorite mc ever. where do rakim , kool g rap and big daddy kane fall on that list? to me, cl smooth ranks somewhere between tajai and little shawn.

very high, hovering around top 5/10-ish. probably Kool G rap, Rakim, BDK in that order. - unless that was a rhetorical question meant to indicate I have wack taste in emcees...all I can say is shame you don't like CL considering he's all over some of the greatest beats created, which must suck, but fair enough if it's your opinion...

Ludacris. Twista. Canibus

Cosign Dilated, Freestyle Fellowship, Living Legends

Fuck the Lox hate though. I loved We Are The Streets. Its bullshit that they haven't put out another group album, but when they do it will be solid. They all stay putting out some random heat here and there. Alaska, are you saying you like Sheek the best out of the Lox? I've never heard that before and he is by far the weakest link.

Also largely disagree about Run DMC, their self-titled still gets play from me

no i think jada is obviously the best but his output is very uneven, and thats sort of a disappointment that someone who is obviously talented and has a great voice doesnt hit like he should.

sheek is just a personal opinion for me. i like his style. i like the way he puts his words together i get a lot of amusement from listening to him.

I couldn't agree more about the whole Cl Smooth thing. If he didn't have Pete Rock with him no one would have given a fuck about him. He's starred in a couple classic albums, yet has no notable lyrics. He is the epitome of average. I've always suspected that people who back him haven't actually listened to his material since 1992.

Anyone here purchase "American Man"? Didn't think so.

As for groups that duped me I'd have to say both "The Juggaknots" and "Cannibal Ox". There where brief periods where I thought both of these groups represented the future of the genre. I was dead fucking wrong.

Not to mention...Did any of you listen to the Weathermen LP? Shit was mad thorough, and i'd say on the level of elzhi, but just a little less on the schematic/pattern shit.

The only similarities Elzhi and Evidence share are the letters E and I.
