This is about sounding "white", not about having a bassy voice or not. Q-Tip, Sadat X and the chipmunk collective in Souls of Mischief were never brushed aside because of the lack of bass in their voices. Nobody here is praying at the alter of Hustle Crowe because he has a bassy voice, either.Thun wrote: Also whites almost never have bassy, cool voices and even when they do they still manage to fag it up 90% of the time. It doesn't matter how many blac rappers supposedly have the same flaws if virtually no whites can transcend them
I (personally) agree that sounding "white" mostly comes off as really corny (regardless of if the person is actually white like Asher Roth or just sounds "white" like Pigeon John or K-OS), but the category and the explanation for it are entirely tautological. You, me and Jason all grew up listening to people who sound "black" -- it's not like any of us are reinventing the wheel of socially embedded taste because that's still the sound we prefer and find authentic in regards to our expectations. All I'm saying is that white rappers still have to balance not sounding too white without sounding as if they're trying too hard to not sound too white. Anybody who doesn't do this (or isn't capable of it) is disregarded from jump street. I'm not saying we should feel sorry for these people or even give a fuck about them (I personally don't), but it explains why a disproportionate number of white rappers suck when it comes to our expectations. I think access to equipment and the sheer numbers game (as mentioned above) explain part of it also.
I don't think anyone is saying it is or need be.Thun wrote: The playing field in rap is not racially even no matter how hard some people here desperately pray to their statue of Elvis that it is.
In any case, yeah, this topic is pretty fucking boring at this point. We go down this road and next thing you know we'll be debating if Black Moon really invented the "backpack and hoodie" look like they claimed in their liner notes.

there probably isn't an album of any genre post 94 that i keep in rotation.
once in a while, i might dig through a pile, find something that i remember liking, and put it in the car for a week.

I like Classified
However, I realize that not only am I Canadian, but Classified is actually from my hometown. Therefore my input is completely disregarded.
Either way, I think there are some good white rappers out there. Not very many, and I'm not sure why that is, but there are some worth mentioning. I imagine the fact that "most" white people don't grow up in surroundings promoting hip-hop influencing music. I mean, growing up all my parents/brother listened to was older rock music or classical. I don't think my parents making me take piano lessons really made me want to rap. I didn't really discover hiphop, funk, jazz, etc. until later on in my 'teens. I would imagine black (African American?) children generally grow up in households with more diverse musical tastes.
Obviously I'm not saying that everyone is like this, but I'm sure that I'm not alone. Maybe this has something to do with it... but maybe not.
I don't want to sound offensive or stereotyping here, just my two cents.

I don't know about Gloss, but I'd rather cut my ears out with ulu knives and donate them to Marley Matlin.Thun wrote:Gloss what if you were forced by terrorists to listen to nothing but those 30 rappers for a whole year?

Dude, he had to cultivate the voice in an unloving, unsupportive suburban household where Led Zeppelin records were in abundance but nary a James brown or Run DMC disc was to be found. Did you not hear my screeches on the Conspiracy interview? I empathize. Doesn't make the music anymore listenable.Thun wrote:BUT IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT! I love that this theory is still widely believed within the general population. Prepare to have your dreams shattered my friend. The "in the name of black power" line was ironic.hellriser wrote:slug why brother ali on this list...? he is albino.... but he is black... in theorysean wrote:brother ali
